Charlie Cleveland: Can "The Reaper" claim another victim and punch his ticket to the big leagues?

Undefeated outside of a submission defeat to recent UFC debutant, RJ Harris, Charlie Cleveland (6-1) enters this matchup following two successive first round KOs under the LFA banner. Fighting out of the Demolition Fighting Team, “The Reaper” has finished all but one of his professional wins in the very first round. The 27 year old American is primarily a striker, earning most of his wins on the feet. However, he’s been known to grab the odd submission, flowing with the action to try and adapt to wherever the fight takes place.

Fighting out of the renowned Chute Box Gym in Brazil, Gabriel Lourenco (7-1) hasn’t tasted defeat since a TKO loss to Igor Cavalcanti in his debut. The 26 year old Brazilian prospect has been on an absolute tear since, scoring six first round finishes and only reaching the judges’ scorecards on one occasion. A taekwondo practitioner from a young age, “Black Mamba” is primarily a kickboxer, but has proven that he isn’t afraid to force the fight to the ground should the occasion require it. He’s well-sized for the weight class at 6’3” and clearly has dynamite in his fists.

As with many heavyweight MMA bouts, this one is likely to be decided by whoever lands a clean shot first; a state of affairs reflected by the tight odds.

Lourenco may have a slight edge in terms of size and athleticism, but I’m leaning towards Cleveland here. “Black Mamba” has been pulverizing his competition on the Brazilian regional circuit but I put more stock in Cleveland’s wins in LFA. His only professional loss is to RJ Harris, a fighter who looks like a half decent UFC heavyweight prospect, while Lourenco’s sole defeat came against a fighter who failed to earn a contract in his Contender Series audition.

It’s also worth noting that Cleveland was submitted in his loss to Harris, while Lourenco was KO’d. Given that he’s been stopped on the feet before and Cleveland is a KO artist in his own right, it’s easier to envision “The Reaper” scoring the KO on paper.

At the end of the day, this is a heavyweight clash between two unproven fighters. The only really certainty is that the judges won’t be required for this one.
