Brandon Holmes: The American looks for redemption in his sophomore appearance

Making his second appearance on the Contender Series following a TKO loss to Cam Rowston first time out, Brandon Holmes (6-1) looks to right the wrongs of last year’s showing. Turning pro after an undefeated amateur career, the American has four finishes in six wins, and rebounded from his loss to Rowston with a devastating slam KO in his only bout since. The 29 year old American leans on heavy hands and forward pressure to overwhelm his opponents, blitzing with powerful combinations until they begin to crumble.

Modestino Rodrigues: Can "The Slenderman" produce another nightmare for Holmes?

Returning to MMA following a three fight side quest in kickboxing, Modestino Rodrigues (7-1) looks to parlay his impressive finishing form from the regional circuit into a UFC contract. “The Slenderman’s” base is actually jiu-jitsu, but you wouldn’t known it from the way he fights; Rodrigues has fallen in love with his hands and likes to press the action on the feet in search of a brutal KO. Case in point, he’s scored KOs in all of his seven professional wins to date, with all but two of those wins coming in the very first round.

Brandon Holmes vs Modestino Rodrigues prediction

We’re tentatively going with Holmes to earn redemption here. With hindsight, Cam Rowston is not a bad loss in the slightest; “The Battle Giraffe” is 3-0 with two stoppages under the UFC banner since beating Holmes to earn a contract.

Rodrigues clearly has nukes in his hands, but his strength of schedule leaves a lot to be desired; three of his wins came over debuting fighters. Furthermore, he’s been finished on the regional circuit by a fighter who was 0-2 and was also KO’d in his most recent kickboxing bout less than a year ago. His recent focus on kickboxing also raises the question as to whether his grappling may have suffered as a result.

Despite Rodrigues’ meagre resume, the odds are tight here for a reason; the Brazilian hits extremely hard and Holmes has been KO’d on this very stage before. However, considering that “The Slenderman" hasn’t proven to be immune to getting KO’d himself, we’re leaning towards Holmes’ heavy hands and edge in experience to get this one done.

Prediction: Brandon Holmes to win by KO
