THE TEAM NEWS

WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS

  • Defending Super Smash champions Wellington Firebirds have won just two of their five games played so far this season, but the most recent of those wins came against Otago Volts, their opponents once again here.
  • Their team has been strengthened significantly since the return of New Zealand limited overs international Jimmy Neesham, who has added crucial balance and he finished as his side’s top wicket taker against the Volts last time out.

OTAGO VOLTS

  • Otago Volts’ struggles in T20 cricket so far in this campaign see them bottom of the Super Smash table and on the back of four straight defeats, their latest coming at the hands of Auckland Aces.
  • Once again, the batting of Otago let them down as they could only score 129/9 from their 20 overs against the Aces, the third time they have scored under 140 runs across their most recent four Super Smash fixtures.

THE PREDICTION

Although the bowling of the Firebirds is not their strongest suit, they are able to make up for this with a strong top order, as was shown when they last beat Otago back on December 28th. Combine that with an experienced middle order made up of captain Michael Bracewell alongside Neesham and Wellington boast the tools within their armoury to outscore the Volts once again here, whether they be batting first or second. Confidence is clearly low among the Otago camp and they are struggling to build any sort of momentum, which is so crucial in a short form competition. Therefore, any result here other than a Wellington Firebirds victory, a second in succession over Hamish Rutherford’s side would be a surprise.
