THE LOWDOWN

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

  • Chennai Super Kings made full use of playing the first qualifier in Chepauk despite finishing second-place in the league table, defeating Gujarat Titans by 15 runs after a masterful strangulation following losing the toss and being forced to bat first.
  • Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad helped CSK reach 172/7 before a brilliant all-round bowling and fielding performance saw MS Dhoni’s side keep the shackles on the Titans, restricting them to just 157 in response.

GUJARAT TITANS

  • Gujarat Titans bounced back brilliantly from that loss in the first qualifier, overwhelming Mumbai Indians with the bat by racking up an eye-watering 233/3, far too many runs for Rohit Sharma’s side to compete against, who were bowled out for 171 with 1.4 overs remaining of the run chase.
  • No doubt playing at home was a big factor in the favour of Gujarat, whose batting blitzed was under-pinned by opener Shubman Gill, the 23-year-old further underlining his status as India’s next batting superstar with 129 from 60 balls, the highest individual score in the history of the IPL play-offs.

THE PREDICTION

The last time these two teams collided, it took place in Chepauk which obviously played heavily in Chennai Super Kings’ favour. This time round, Ahmedabad is the location for the 2023 IPL final which puts the ball in Gujarat Titans’ court. The reigning champions know what it takes to win a big final on this ground. But in MS Dhoni, they face the smartest captain in the tournament who has made a career of leading teams to victories in showpiece events such as an IPL final. Add that to the avalanche of big-match experience within the Chennai Super Kings squad and all the ingredients are in place for them to unseat the Gujarat machine. In a contest of such high stakes, back MS Dhoni’s cool head and shrewd tactical mind to be a defining factor and help guide Chennai Super Kings to a fifth IPL title.

*Due to heavy rain, this match has been rescheduled to the reserve day of Monday 29th May with a scheduled start of 15:00 UK time. Should the match not be completed, Gujarat Titans will be declared winners of the 2023 IPL due to finishing top of the league stage
