THE LOWDOWN

INDIA

Coach: Rahul Dravid

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • India kick off the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup on home soil with the weight of expectation as hosts and favourites but they will be confident as they are in good shape and possess arguably the strongest group of players in the tournament.
  • They were outstanding in the recent series against Australia and that was without star all-rounder Hardik Pandya so while they may be without Shubman Gill who is struggling with illness, they will go with a strong line-up as they look to get off to a positive start.

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Pat Cummins

  • Five-time World Cup winners Australia will be looking to win their first since 2015 and they will be relatively pleased with their preparations coming into this event although they have a tough assignment in this opener against the hosts.
  • They have a couple of injury concerns over Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa but the spinner should be fine to play and the vast majority of this Australian squad are IPL regulars so they will be well versed to the conditions they can expect in Chennai.

THE PREDICTION

While the first few matches at the World Cup have been relatively poorly attended, this clash in Chennai promises to be packed to the rafters so that should finally signal the tournament really getting going. All the pressure is on India here and it will be interesting to see how they cope with that. Do not rule out a slow start from their perspective as there is a lot of expectation and their opponents here are probably the last team they would want to face so early. Australia essentially have nothing to lose and will be fired up to cause an upset and there is every chance they can. This really is a match that could go either way, but the value pick is on Pat Cummins’ team.

BETTING TIP: Australia to win
