THE TEAM NEWS

PERTH SCORCHERS

  • Perth Scorchers defeated reigning champions Sydney Sixers last time out by 10 runs, their eighth win in nine BBL matches this campaign, their only defeat coming against opponents here Sydney Thunder.
  • The Scorchers have lost both wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh after both were called up as cover for Australia’s final two Ashes Test matches, whilst overseas player Tymal Mills has also left the Scorchers camp to prepare for England’s upcoming T20i series with West Indies.

SYDNEY THUNDER

  • Sydney Thunder’s latest victory, a 28-run triumph over Adelaide Strikers was their third successive BBL win and leaves them well placed in the table heading into their second clash with Perth Scorchers this season.
  • All three English overseas players whom Sydney Thunder began the competition are not expected to feature here, as both Sam Billings and Saqib Mahmood have returned home at the request of the ECB, whilst opener Alex Hales has tested positive for Covid-19, although Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain will be looking to back up his excellent performance on debut against the Strikers.

THE PREDICTION

Two significantly weakened sides will take to the field compared to previous matches due to a mixture of international call-ups and positive Covid-19 cases. Add that to the forecasted inclement weather and it makes this match difficult to predict. Perth Scorchers were able to cope very well with the absences of players such as Marsh and Mills earlier on in the campaign and the expectation that they should be able to do so again here. Sydney Thunder however, are likely to find things more difficult without previously key players such as Billings and Saqib and for that reason, backing Perth Scorchers for the victory looks to be the smart play.
