GERMANY
- The two-time world champions enter the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over them following a couple of hugely underwhelming years on the pitch.
- Despite being ranked second in the world and current Olympic champions, the Germans have turned to former player Martina Voss-Tecklenburg to turn the country’s fortunes around after finishing last in the SheBelieves Cup.
- Germany face China in their opening contest and will be keen to get off to a good start to avoid any unnecessary pressure being placed on them with Lyon’s Dzsenifer Marozsan key to her side’s chances and the playmaker enters this tournament in superb form.
CHINA
- China enter this competition with the aim of progressing to the knockout stages but face a tricky route to make it there, especially when facing Germany in their first match of the tournament.
- They might be able to catch the Germans off guard but this young side know they face an uphill task of taking anything from the game if Germany can rediscover their best form.
- A lot of the Chinese hopes will rest with Wang Shuang who is undoubtedly their most important player and the PSG forward comes into this tournament on the back of seven goals and eight assists from just 18 matches in her debut season for the French outfit.
THE PREDICTION
Germany are one of the favourites for this tournament but they have a big challenge to live up to that tag after some poor performances in recent years. New head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has had little to prepare her side but her sheer presence may provide the lift that the Germans need. With a small pool of players to choose from and a lack of genuine quality outside of a handful of players, China will find this tough going with Germany able to get underway with a victory.
