THE PLAYERS

JONNY CLAYTON

  • Jonny Clayton lost 10-6 to Michael Smith with an average of 84.06 in the opening round on his debut at the World Matchplay last year.

  • He disappointingly exited in the early rounds at both the World Championship and UK Open having reached back-to-back quarter-finals at the Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship finals at the tail end of 2018.

  • Clayton’s tournament win at Players Championship 10 in April means he has claimed a title on the PDC tour in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

KEEGAN BROWN

  • Keegan Brown claimed qualification for the Matchplay at the last event before the cut-off when he made the semi-finals at the Czech Darts Open, notably defeating Michael van Gerwen along the way.

  • This is Brown’s third appearance at the Matchplay; he lost to Dave Chisnall in the second round in 2015 and again lost to Chisnall in the first round in 2018.

  • He has only made it further than the last 32 in one TV ranking tournament since progressing to the last 16 at Winter Gardens in 2015.

THE PREDICTION

Jonny Clayton will be keen to improve on his poor performance here in 2018 and although he could have certainly had a tougher draw this time out, it is still potentially a difficult game against a player who will see just participating in this tournament as a bonus due to his last-gasp qualification. Brown is talented but can be too erratic and Clayton’s extra consistency will be the deciding factor.
