What’s on today (8 February) at the Winter Olympics?
The Winter Olympics officially began a couple of days ago with preliminary events getting underway before the Opening Ceremony took place at San Siro in Milan on Friday 6th February.
There were five medal events on Saturday and now we have a further eight as the Biathlon and Luge begin to take centre stage in the north west of Italy.
Medal events
Alpine Skiing: Women’s downhill final | 10.30am (UK)
The first medal event of Sunday comes in the Alpine Skiing. Lindsey Vonn is the standout name from this event. She, apparently, ‘did’ her ACL earlier this week but believes she will be good to go and she has made it to the final, which is an achievement in itself.
Cross-Country Skiing: Men’s skiathlon final | 11.30am (UK)
Norway dominate the field in the men’s Skiathlon. However, in a 75-athlete field, there are two Brits seeking to upset the odds on Sunday afternoon.
Biathlon: Mixed Relay | 1.05pm (UK)
In the Biathlon, there are 21 teams but the favourites come from the United States, Norway, Czechia, Italy and France at the Anterselva Biathalon Arena.
Snowboarding: Women’s parallel giant slalom | 1.26pm (UK)
The women’s giant parallel slalom has 29 athletes, dominated by the Chinese, and it is a close contest with the quarter-finals, semi-final and finals all on the same day.
Snowboarding: Men’s parallel giant slalom | 1.36pm (UK)
The men’s giant parallel slalom is a similar format and takes place soon after.
Speed Skating: Men’s 5000m | 3pm (UK)
The first Speed Skating medal event comes in the men’s 5000m, with qualification taking place earlier in the day.
Luge: Men’s Singles | 5.34pm (UK)
In the first two runs, Germany’s Max Langenhan has come out on top in both and so he will be the heavy favourite for gold in a top-tier field that is dominated by his compatriots as well as the Austrians and the Latvians.
Figure Skating: Men’s singles | 8.55pm (UK)
In qualification, the big name athlete in the figure skating in Ilia Malinin, but he has qualified in second for the men’s singles final behind Yuma Kagiyama.
Other events
Curling: Mixed doubles preliminaries | 9.05am – 6.05pm (UK)
Team GB have made a sensational start to the curling with five wins from five, courtesy from victories against Canada and Team USA. They are reading themselves to face the Swiss on Sunday.
Ice Hockey: Women’s preliminaries | 3.40pm – 8.10pm (UK)
There are another two games in the women’s Ice Hockey as the French take on the Swedish before a star-studded tie featuring the Czechs and the Estonians.
