Hyder Amil: "The Hurricane" returns in search of the form that carried him to a 3-0 start in the UFC

Known for his knockout power and putting a frenetic pace on his opponents, Hyder Amil (11-2) has hit somewhat of a wall since an electric 3-0 start to life in the promotion, scoring two KOs along the way. "The Hurricane" looked set for bigger and better competition after handing William Gomis his first defeat in the promotion, only for Jose Delgado to instantly halt his momentum with a brutal twenty six second KO in his next fight, catching Amil with a vicious knee and putting him away with follow up shots. The American's next bout saw him soundly outwrestled by Jamall Emmers in a bout that laid bare an Achilles heel in his game; Emmers took him down seven times en route to a clear cut decision victory.

Christian Rodriguez: What version of "CeeRod" will show up in the cage come Saturday night?

Known as one of the UFC's premiere prospect killers, there are seemingly few fighters capable of stifling hype better than Christian Rodriguez (12-4). The Roufussport representative has snatched the undefeated records of Raul Rosas Jr., Cameron Saimann, and Isaac Dulgarian, making it all the more confusing when he drops fights to the likes of Andre Fili or Julian Erosa. Boasting a lightning fast technical kickboxing game and superb takedown defense, Rodriguez's main shortcoming is a lack of stopping power, although it's worth noting that he's also proven incredibly difficult to finish. He's also a touch undersized for the featherweight division, allowing some fighters to leverage a power and physicality advantage to defeat him.

Hyder Amil vs Christian Rodriguez prediction

Rodriguez truly is one of the most unpredictable fighters on the roster. Give him a highly touted prospect and he’ll triumph as a huge underdog, but throw him in against an opponent that he’s favored to beat, and the American will lay an egg more often than not.

With that being said, I think he has enough to get past Amil here. “CeeRod” has fought considerably stiffer levels of competition and acquitted himself admirably even in the fights where he’s come up short. Rodriguez gave Melquizael Costa a run for his money just two fights ago, while Amil’s best win is a borderline robbery over William Gomis.

“The Hurricane” has power, but he’s considerably less well-rounded than the Roufussport representative. Jamall Emmers exposed Amil’s sub-par wrestling defense in a pretty major way last time out and Rodriguez has never been afraid to mix in takedowns during his fights. Furthermore, he’s got an iron chin and slick striking, to the point that he may even have the edge in exchanges on the feet in this one.

I expect Amil to start strong and fade as he typically does when he’s unable to get the finish early on. This should allow Rodriguez to take over in the later rounds, establishing the jab and working in takedowns to earn the decision.

Prediction: Christian Rodriguez to win by decision
