Charles Oliveira: Your favourite fighters’ favourite fighter
Charles “Do Bronxs” Oliveira (35-11) is probably Brazil’s most celebrated fighters and a former UFC lightweight champion. Now 35, he continues to test himself against the division’s elite, carrying the record for the most submission wins in UFC history with 16. Training out of the famed ChuteBoxe gym in São Paulo under Diego Lima, Oliveira has faced a who’s who of top names in the division. He claimed the lightweight belt in 2021 and defending it against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje before losing to Islam Makhachev. Since then, he has experienced highs and lows — bouncing back with wins over Beneil Dariush and Michael Chandler in their rematch, but dropping decisions to Arman Tsarukyan and most recently being knocked out by pound-for-pound king Ilia Topuria.
Oliveira’s style remains dangerous. He is a lethal submission artist with opportunistic grappling from any position, capable of snatching finishes in chaotic exchanges. Though he has absorbed plenty of damage across his career, he still displays lethal Muay Thai, pairing it with elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and relentless forward pressure.
Mateusz Gamrot: Wrestling powerhouse looking to spoil the party in Rio
Mateusz “The Gamer” Gamrot (23-3) is ranked number eight at lightweight and enters UFC Rio with a reputation as one of the best pure wrestlers in the entire UFC. The 34-year-old Pole trains out of American Top Team under Mike Brown and has proven himself against world-class opposition, with notable wins over Arman Tsarukyan, Rafael dos Anjos, and Rafael Fiziev. Gamrot is 8-3 in the UFC, most recently defeating Ľudovít Klein by unanimous decision after a razor-close decision loss to Dan Hooker.
Gamrot’s strengths lie in his suffocating wrestling, durability, and pace. He scrambles brilliantly, transitions seamlessly, and drags opponents into grinding fights. Though he lacks a consistent submission threat, his ability to dictate where the fight takes place makes him a nightmare match-up. Importantly, Gamrot has never been finished in his professional career, underlining his toughness and resilience.
Charles Oliveira vs Mateusz Gamrot prediction
This fight represents a fascinating stylistic clash. Originally scheduled to face Muay Thai striker Rafael Fiziev, Oliveira now meets a completely different test in Gamrot, whose wrestling-heavy style poses unique challenges. The Brazilian, however, has already undergone training camps for elite grapplers like Tsarukyan and Makhachev, which will have sharpened his approach to defending takedowns and capitalising on openings in scrambles. Oliveira must punish Gamrot’s shots with knees and elbows, forcing him to pay a price for closing the distance.
Gamrot will look to grind, wear Oliveira down, and smother him with relentless takedown attempts. Yet Oliveira remains lethal off his back, dangerous in transitions, and capable of finding a finish at any moment. With a full camp behind him and the experience of having beaten and battled the very best, Oliveira still has more weapons in his arsenal.
Expect a gritty, high-paced battle, but the edge goes to the Brazilian’s submission threat and fight-changing power.
Prediction: Charles Oliveira to win
