Charles “Do Bronxs” Oliveira (35-11) is probably Brazil’s most celebrated fighters and a former UFC lightweight champion. Now 35, he continues to test himself against the division’s elite, carrying the record for the most submission wins in UFC history with 16. Training out of the famed ChuteBoxe gym in São Paulo under Diego Lima, Oliveira has faced a who’s who of top names in the division. Mateusz “The Gamer” Gamrot (23-3) is ranked number eight at lightweight and enters UFC Rio with a reputation as one of the best pure wrestlers in the entire UFC. The 34-year-old Pole trains out of American Top Team under Mike Brown and has proven himself against world-class opposition, with notable wins over Arman Tsarukyan, Rafael dos Anjos, and Rafael Fiziev. Gamrot is 8-3 in the UFC, most recently defeating Ľudovít Klein by unanimous decision after a razor-close decision loss to Dan Hooker.
Gamrot’s strengths lie in his suffocating wrestling, durability, and pace. He scrambles brilliantly, transitions seamlessly, and drags opponents into grinding fights. Though he lacks a consistent submission threat, his ability to dictate where the fight takes place makes him a nightmare match-up.
