Su Mudaerji: "The Tibetan Eagle" looks to add to his two fight win streak
Posting a 5-4 record in the UFC since joining the promotion in 2019, Su Mudaerji (18-7) remains one of the slicker strikers that the flyweight division has to offer. While he's best known for coming out on the wrong end of a spectacular comeback victory against Matt Schnell in 2022, "The Tibetan Eagle" has typically had little trouble with disposing of fighters on the fringes of the 125 pound rankings. A rough three fight skid that included two stoppage losses had many questioning whether the Chinese fighter was on his way out of the promotion, but he's since rebounded with convincing victories over Mitch Raposo and Kevin Borjas, leaning on his striking acumen to cruise to decision victories.
Jesus Santos Aguilar: Can the Mexican bruiser overcome a significant edge in height and reach?
The UFC did Jesus Aguilar (12-3) absolutely no favors in his debut, feeding the Mexican to top prospect, Tatsuro Taira for his first appearance. However, while the Contender Series graduate was eventually submitted in that matchup, Aguilar had his moments against the latest title challenger at flyweight, even catching Taira in a tight guillotine early in the fight. He's 4-1 since that result, a run that included a hellacious KO over Shannon Ross and a vicious guillotine submission over Stewart Nicoll; the only man to beat him outside of Taira is undefeated prospect, Rafael Estevam. Aguilar was last seen in action at UFC Noche last September, earning a clear cut decision over Luis Gurule.
Su Mudaerji vs Jesus Santos Aguilar prediction
Aguilar is on the wrong edge of a serious size and reach discrepancy, but he’s still a live dog here. Outside of a submission defeat in his debut, the Mexican has only ever been bested by Rafael Estevam and Tatsuro Taira, two enormous flyweights with just a single loss between them in thirty three combined MMA fights.
Furthermore, Aguilar has a ferocious overhand and a brutal guillotine choke in his tool bag; he could conceivably bomb “The Tibetan Eagle” out cold or hurt him badly enough to lock up a submission while Mudaerji is dazed. The Chinese flyweight isn’t invulnerable; his 2022 war with Matt Schnell proved that he can be wobbled and eventually put away.
Unfortunately for Aguilar, Mudaerji’s elusive movement and rangy point striking seems tailor made to win this sort of match up. While he's not a particularly powerful striker, “The Tibetan Eagle” typically leverages his reach to pepper his opponents at range, and Aguilar is at such a size disadvantage that it’s going to be exceedingly difficult for him to close the distance and do damage in close. The Chinese fighter is also an excellent kicker and will go to the body and head outside of punching range to keep Aguilar honest.
This could get exciting if Aguilar can force his way into the pocket to land something murderous, but the pick is Mudaerji by uneventful decision.
Prediction: Su Mudaerji to win by decision
