Drew Dober: Explosive knockout artist who lives for the early blitz
Drew Dober (28-15) holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC lightweight history with ten, and his approach hasn’t changed – he comes out swinging. The 37-year-old is at his most dangerous in the easy rounds, where his explosiveness and willingness to crash in with heavy combinations can overwhelm opponents. His recent losses to Renato Moicano, Jean Silva, and Manuel Torres raised questions about his level, however, his chin held up remarkably well against Silva’s power throughout their fight. Dober isn’t the most defensively conscious striker, as he enters exchanges without setups and can be caught coming in, but his raw power and aggression make him a threat to anyone in the division early.
Michael Johnson: Technical southpaw riding a late-career resurgence
Michael Johnson (24-19) is in the midst of a genuine career renaissance at 39 years old. He has won his last three fights including a stunning upset over Daniel Zellhuber as a massive underdog. Johnson fights patiently at range, using a jab to the body to establish distance before dipping in with sharp one-twos and longer boxing combinations. His striking defence has improved in recent outings, showing good head movement and distance management. However, Johnson can be wild in the pocket during exchanges and has a tendency to overextend on his backhand, leaving him heavy on his front foot and vulnerable to counters.
Drew Dober vs Michael Johnson prediction
Johnson is the more technical and disciplined striker, fighting patiently from southpaw and mixing his jab to the body with clean combinations. His distance management and boxing defence have looked sharp during his current win streak, and if he can keep this at range and resist getting drawn into wild exchanges, he has the tools to beat Dober.
However, Dober's explosiveness in the early rounds presents a serious problem. He doesn't set up his entries with feints — he simply crashes in — but the sheer volume and power of his early blitzes can overwhelm even disciplined opponents. Johnson fights fairly upright in his stance, which could allow Dober to close distance early with success. If Dober can land clean in the first round, Johnson's tendency to get wild in the pocket during exchanges could play directly into his hands.
The key question is whether Dober's chin will hold up if Johnson lands clean. Dober was stopped by Manuel Torres in his last loss, though Torres is a renowned finisher operating at a different level to Johnson. Against Jean Silva, another heavy-handed opponent, Dober's chin held up but he was rocked in a few moments. Dober's power is most potent early, and if he can't get the job done in the opening rounds, Johnson's technical edge and body work could take over. This fight sits near pick'em odds for good reason, but Dober's early explosiveness and power advantage tip the scales slightly in his favour.
Prediction: Drew Dober to win by KO/TKO
