THE PREDICTION

World number six Elina Svitolina married fellow tennis star Gael Monfils earlier this week but the honeymoon will have to wait as they both enter the Tokyo Olympics for Ukraine and France, respectively. Big outside occasions like marriages and new children can often positively affect an athlete’s performance and 26-year-old Svitolina could well be one to watch as a result following a fairly disappointing season on court so far. The former world number three has an incredible 15 WTA titles so far but has struggled to make the latter stages of tournaments entered this year and a first meeting with Laura Siegemund will not be easy.

World number 61 Siegemund has also struggled to make an impact on tour for some time, with a quarter-final appearance at last year’s Roland-Garros perhaps her last outstanding result, but the 33-year-old is very experienced and will be aware of Svitolina’s recent form. Svitolina was shocked in the second round of Wimbledon earlier this month by Magda Linette, who became one of four players outside the top 40 to beat the Ukrainian this year. This looks a tough result to call any which way so take the fourth seed to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
