Tereza Valentova continued her fine form as she thrashed Aoi Ito 6-2 6-0 in the first-round of the Prague Open. The Czech won on the ITF Tour in Porto last week and is now on a six match winning run. She did make a shaky start in this encounter, as she was broken in her first two serving games, but it was plain sailing for the 18-year-old after that, as she won 10 games in a row to seal an easy win.
She now goes up against Rebecca Sramkova, who is the second seed. Sramkova produced a stuttering display in her first-round match as she required three sets to defeat world number 589 Jesika Maleckova. It seemed to be heading towards a routine win for the Slovak, as she went a set and a break up but her serve deserted her towards the end of the second set, leading to the match going to a decider. Sramkova regrouped to win 6-3 4-6 6-4.
Valentova is continuing her emergence in the women’s game and will relish the opportunity of facing one of the best players left in the draw. Sramkova will need to perform better in this one if she is to continue her progression in the tournament.
