THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 16th into Indian Wells after starting 2024 in strong form. The Russian finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Linz Open last month, having lost out to the Latvian in the semi-finals of Adelaide the month before, and she looked in good shape at the Qatar Masters before a last 16 exit to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. A straight-sets defeat to Magdalena Frech last time out in Dubai was not in the script but Alexandrova should be able to bounce back here with the powerful game required to excel at Indian Wells.
World number 79 Yulia Putintseva handily beat Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets on Wednesday to claim her first tour-level win in over a month but the Kazakh is always capable of bursting into form at a moment’s notice, with a ceiling far higher than her current deflated ranking suggests. Alexandrova beat Putintseva in straight sets 11 months ago at the Charleston Open but take the Russian to win outright here for caution’s sake following her shock exit last time out.
TIP: EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA TO WIN
