THE PREDICTION
World number 27 Sorana Cirstea brings a five-match losing streak into the Australian Open, with her last victory coming in late September, but the Romanian should still be considered a creditable threat. The 33-year-old enjoyed some of the best form of her career across the Sunshine Double last March, reaching the quarter-finals at Indian Wells and the semi-finals at the Miami Open with victories over the likes of Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Muchova. Cirstea’s best run of the year was an incredible quarter-final exit at the US Open, to Muchova, with a stunning upset of Elena Rybakina in the third round proving her explosive best at this level.
World number 94 Yafan Wang enjoyed some incredible form on the ITF circuit last summer and she stunned Caroline Garcia at the US Open off the back of it before a three-set exit to Katie Boulter. The 29-year-old stands a serious chance at the upset given Cirstea’s form but back the Romanian to squeak through, with this match well worth leaving out of an accumulator.
