World number 51 Viktorija Golubic beat Yulia Putintseva over three sets on Saturday to reach the third round of Indian Wells for successive seasons. The 29-year-old enjoyed her best season tour last year, with wins here against Marketa Vondrousova and Maria Sakkari testament to a level that saw her reach two finals on tour and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. Golubic won a Gold Medal in the Women’s Doubles alongside Belinda Bencic at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

World number 46 Jasmine Paolini claimed a career-best win over second seed Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, fighting back impressively from a set down to the Belarussian. The 26-year-old won her first WTA title last season at the Slovenian Open, beating Alison Riske in the final.
THE PREDICTION
Jasmine Paolini’s steady rise up the WTA rankings has been a hard-fought slog but defeating the likes of Aryna Sabalenka is still a pretty hefty shock. The Italian never knows when she is beaten and that could serve her well against Viktorija Golubic, with three sets likely in this first tour-level meeting between the two. Given their recent results, backing Paolini to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems suitably cautious here.
