World number 28 Qinwen Zheng will be one to watch in 2023 after a blistering rise up the rankings last season and particularly impressive turns at Grand Slams. The 20-year-old started as she means to continue with a three-set victory over sixth-seed Anett Kontaveit on Tuesday, saving match point against the former world number two, and she can count the likes of Ons Jabeur, Bianca Andreescu, Jelena Ostapenko, Paula Badosa and Veronika Kudermetova amongst her victories since the start of the late hardcourt swing last year. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka overcame Anhelina Kalinina in two tight tiebreaks to reach the Adelaide round of 16 and it will be fascinating to see what level she can produce over the next month. The 33-year-old’s two Grand Slam titles were won here in 2012 and 2013 and after a difficult season last year she ended strongly, reaching the round of 16 at the US Open and the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Masters. This should be a close-run thing but back the currently insatiable Qinwen Zheng to edge this outright.
