Former world number one Victoria Azarenka won both of her Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in successive years 2012-13 but she has come close on three occasions here in New York, finishing runner-up in 2012, 2013 and more recently to Naomi Osaka in 2020. The 34-year-old has struggled for most of the season on tour but she found her battling best in Melbourne back in January to reach the semi-finals before defeat to eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina and she should be considered a threat to all comers this fortnight. World number 190 Fiona Ferro received a wildcard to the main draw at the US Open and she has won both of her previous first round matches in New York. The 26-year-old’s career has dwindled over the last few seasons, far from the potential she showed in reaching the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in 2020, and she looks set for a tough day in this first meeting with Azarenka. Back the Belarussian to kick things off in straight sets.
