24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 24th to match her age last month after finishing runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Russian also finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1 back in January and she can break her career-high with one more round reached here at Indian Wells after a stunning victory over Naomi Osaka in the second.
MARKETA VONDROUSOVA
Former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova won two fewer points than Anett Kontaveit on Monday night to illustrate just how close their thrilling third round clash came. The 22-year-old burst onto the scene as a teenage runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019, two years after winning her first title at the Biel Open in only her second main draw outing. Vondrousova finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic at the Tokyo Olympic Games last season to win a Silver Medal.
THE PREDICTION
Marketa Vondorusova came back from a set down via a hugely impressive deciding set tiebreak to oust the most in-form player in the draw at Indian Wells, Anett Kontaveit, but she has been threatening a return to the top 20 for some time, with four semi-finals reached over her last eight tournaments. After beating one of the favourites for the tournament the world number 32 looks the slightest of favourites here but Veronika Kudermetova has been in serious form for some time too, with two runner-up finishes this season already. Three sets seems likely, making backing Vondrousova to win at least one of them look the sensible option.
