28th seed Veronika Kudermetova beat Claire Liu in straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open for only a second time. The world number 32 continued her strong form from finishing runner-up to Simona Halep at Melbourne Summer Set 1 two weeks ago, although she avoided a semi-final clash with Naomi Osaka there via a walkover. 24-year-old Kudermetova won her first WTA title last season at the Charleston Open on clay.

24-year-old Elena-Gabriela Ruse will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 62nd after ousting in-form Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Monday. The Romanian conceded just four games to Paolini on her Australian Open debut to reach the second round of a Grand Slam for a first time. Ruse won her first WTA title at the Hamburg Open on clay last season, also finishing runner-up to Danielle Collins at the Palermo Open on her favoured surface.

Elena-Gabriela Ruse could surprise a lot of people here against the 28th seed, with her performance against Jasmine Paolini quite unexpected. Kudermetova did reach the finals of Melbourne 1 at the start of the season but she was taken to three sets by almost all comers there before losing in two to Halep and until Monday she has been unconvincing against players around Ruse’s level. The obvious pick is for the Russian to find a way through, and therefore the sensible move, but taking Ruse to win at least a set here looks a shrewd option.
