World number seven Felix Auger-Aliassime finally won his first ATP title last season at the Rotterdam Open, after eight losing his eight previous finals, and then they came in droves for the Canadian with three more claimed in Florence, Antwerp and Basel. The 22-year-old’s transformative 2022 started promisingly with a five-set defeat to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open but he was found wanting at the remaining three majors of the season. Auger-Aliassime’s best run was a semi-final exit at the US Open in 2021, also to Medvedev, and a first major final should be the Canadian’s main goal for 2023.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a good-natured first round clash between 2022 Davis Cup winners Vasek Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime, who have spent a few years representing Canada together on tour alongside Denis Shapovalov. World number 94 Pospisil actually claimed their most recent meeting at the 2020 Vienna Open but there is no question that Auger-Aliassime is a different class two years on. Auger-Aliassime has struggled to reach his imperious best in recent tournaments and he lost his 2023 opener to Alexei Popyrin in a pretty hefty shock at Adelaide 1. That makes taking the 22-year-old to win outright the suitably cautious move here, particularly as Pospisil knows his compatriot’s weak points well.
