THE PREDICTION
Both Tommy Paul and Jack Draper enjoyed transformative seasons in 2022 in their respective careers and this should be an entertaining first meeting on tour between the two. 25-year-old Paul set a career-high ATP world ranking of 28th last September that should have been much higher after his excellent run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon went unrewarded by the points ban but the American’s game improved radically that summer, the highlight of which was a stupendous victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the Canada Masters. 21-year-old Draper grabbed some eye-catching results of his own in 2022 with shock wins over the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime amongst others and he came into Adelaide 2 at a career-high ATP world ranking of 40th. The Brit beat Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets on Monday for a great opening result whilst eighth-seed Paul ousted Christopher O’Connell in a tighter win in two.
Three sets seem likely here but Paul ended last season with three incredible wins over Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta and an ailing Rafael Nadal to look the favourite in his early 2023 contests. Back the American to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
