24-year-old Tommy Paul will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 38th after a straight-sets victory over Mikhail Kukushkin on Friday. The American also grabbed an impressive win in the Men’s Doubles alongside Taylor Fritz as they beat Pablo Carreno Busta and Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday. Paul won the first ATP title of his career late last season at the Stockholm Open via wins over Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Andy Murray and Denis Shapovalov.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
World number three Alexander Zverev is likely to receive a frosty reception at best at Indian Wells after his ugly actions at the Mexican Open last month. The 24-year-old received multiple fines and a suspended ban after attacking an umpire’s chair in his doubles defeat in Acapulco, the video of which went viral for all the worst reasons. On the court, Zverev enjoyed the best season of his career last year with a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games, a second ATP Finals title and two Masters titles from Madrid and Cincinnati.
THE PREDICTION
There are several reasons why this match could end up the upset of the day on Sunday between Tommy Paul and Alexander Zverev. The world number three has a lot to prove after his career-tarring episode in Acapulco and the crowd will likely be as partisan as they come in favour of home hopeful Tommy Paul. 24-year-old Paul was the winner of their only previous meeting too, with a straight-sets upset victory at – of all places – the Mexican Open back in 2020. Paul put up a solid fight against Rafael Nadal in Acapulco last month, taking the eventual champion to a tiebreak in the second set after a first bagel. With the crowd against him Zverev will have to stay as zen as possible to come through this match. Back Paul to snatch at least a set here but it would be best left out of an accumulator.
