World number 110 Thanasi Kokkinakis beat another top 30 player on Thursday in a three-set tussle with Miomir Kecmanovic to back-up one of the best wins of his career over Andrey Rublev. The Adelaide 2 defending champion claimed his maiden – and so far only – ATP title here in his home town last season and the home crowd is proving to be his superpower once again as he looks increasingly like the favourite to win again. World number 26 Roberto Bautista Agut beat fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in comfortable straight sets in the earlier match to stay the obvious title contender in the last four and he is more capable than most in partisan conditions as a vastly experienced, always-on tour professional. A first meeting with Kokkinakis elsewhere on tour would likely fall Bautista Agut’s way fairly comfortably but Australia, and better yet Adelaide, gives Kokkinakis a few extra gears. This will be the Aussie’s toughest test this week but back him to earn at least a set as the underdog with plenty of fight left.
