World number 97 Thanasi Kokkinakis won the first ATP title of his injury-hampered career in his home town at Adelaide 2 back in January and he took that form into a joyous, raucous Men’s Doubles title-winning campaign at the Australian Open alongside friend and compatriot Nick Kyrgios. The pair were stopped at Indian Wells by eventual champions John Isner and Jack Sock last time out but they have received wildcards to take the touring ‘Special K’s show to Miami. In the singles, Kokkinakis has qualified without dropping a set to face a difficult opener against 35-year-old Richard Gasquet, who leads their head-to-head record 2-0. Former world number seven Gasquet has twice beaten Ugo Humbert this season to prove his worth to the tour still in the twilight of his career and he has a solid chance here in the pair’s first meeting since a five-set showdown at the US Open in 2015. Given his record, and Kokkinakis’ three-match singles losing streak, take Gasquet to win at least a set here.
