THE LOWDOWN

THANASI KOKKINAKIS

World number 97 Thanasi Kokkinakis claimed one of the wins of his career on Friday in a huge comeback victory from a set down over the 13th seed Diego Schwartzman. The 25-year-old won the first ATP title of his injury-hampered career at Adelaide 2 for an emotional day in his hometown back in January. He took that form straight into Melbourne for a fairy-tale Australian Open Men’s Doubles title won alongside friend and compatriot Nick Kyrgios.

DENIS KUDLA

World number 84 Denis Kudla came back from a set down to shock the 19th seed Lorenzo Sonego on Friday to reach the third round of a Masters event for only the second time in his career. The 29-year-old won a high-quality Challenger event last week, singles and doubles, for a 13-match winning streak including two qualifying rounds in Miami.

THE PREDICTION

This is a huge opportunity for one of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Denis Kudla to reach the round of 16 at the Miami Open. For 29-year-old Kudla it would be the first round of 16 at a Masters event of his career and his winning streak is mightily impressive despite just two of 13 coming at tour level so far. The American leads Thanasi Kokkinakis 2-0 in their head-to-head record, including a three-set victory at the Los Cabos Open last summer, and that suggests taking him to win at least a set is the sensible call here in a match that could go either way. Kokkinakis is a different player after his success in Australian in January and a victory over Schwartzman is a statement.
