25-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis has played superbly this week in Miami, with a three-set victory over in-form Denis Kudla backing up a brilliant comeback win over Diego Schwartzman. The Aussie finally won the first ATP title of his injury-hampered career at Adelaide 2, his hometown, in January and he took that form into a joyous Men’s Doubles title-winning campaign alongside friend Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
24-year-old Alexander Zverev can move back into third in the ATP world rankings with one more win in Miami after a professional straight-sets victory over Mackenzie McDonald on Sunday. The German enjoyed his best season on tour in 2021 a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games perhaps his pinnacle. A second WTA Finals crown and two further Masters titles from Madrid and Cincinnati brought Zverev up to 20 career ATP titles – a remarkable feat for his age.
THE PREDICTION
If Alexander Zverev was going to be stunned by a lower-ranked opponent at the Miami Open, as he was by Tommy Paul at Indian Wells two weeks ago, then it would likely have happened by now. His aggressive outburst at the recent Mexican Open will be a cloud that hangs over him and the crowds that watch him for some time but it seems that he has found a way to move past that on court. That is not to say that Thanasi Kokkinakis is incapable of the upset here, with a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at last season’s Australian Open still fresh in the memory, but the sensible call is for Zverev to win outright here. You could add at least one tiebreak in the match, with three coming in Kokkinakis’ last two rounds.
