THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Taylor Fritz passed a significant test on Monday with a consummate victory over in-form Sebastian Baez, backing up a solid opener over Alejandro Tabilo to complete the set of last month’s Chile Open finalists. The 26-year-old won his most prestigious of eight ATP titles here two years ago, beating Rafael Nadal in the final, but he has struggled to push on from that excellent season with defeat in five sets to Nadal at Wimbledon later that summer a real watershed moment in his career. If Fritz can find that previous level he should be considered a dark horse for the title this week and he will be backed to the hilt as the US number one by a raucous home support here in the desert.

World number seven Holger Rune beat Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to kick-start his Indian Wells campaign, having enjoyed a walkover in the previous round, but the Dane is currently even further from his best level than Fritz. It should not take long for 20-year-old Rune to rediscover his fearsome intensity on court but a coaching merry-go-round in recent months has certainly not helped. The incoming clay is likely to get a tune out of Rune but back Fritz to edge through this encounter in conditions that suit him better – just as he did in their only previous meeting last season in Miami.

TIP: TAYLOR FRITZ TO WIN
