THE PREDICTION
World number seven Taylor Fritz is the top seed here at the Delray Beach Open and it has been plain sailing so far for the 25-year-old after a straight-sets victory over Emilio Gomez on Thursday. Fritz was stunned by Alexei Popyrin in five sets in the second round of the Australian Open last month after impressing as part of the USA team that won the inaugural United Cup and he was also upset by eventual champion Yibing Wu in Dallas last week to suggest he remains slightly vulnerable. World number 59 Adrian Mannarino is one of the more unpredictable players on tour these days and he caused a mini-upset on Thursday in a surprising straight-sets victory over in-form J.J. Wolf. The 34-year-old is a solid contender at tournaments of this size, with his title at last season’s Winston-Salem Open for proof, and he leads Fritz 2-1 in their head-to-head record. Fritz claimed their most recent meeting in straight sets last year in Acapulco, though, and backing the American to win outright looks the suitably cautious move here.
