THE LOWDOWN
World number two Ons Jabeur enjoyed a transformative season in 2022 that saw her win a first Masters title in Madrid, finish runner-up in her first two Grand Slam finals in London and New York, and become the first Arab player to qualify for the year-end WTA Finals. The 28-year-old made her first serious foray at a major tournament here in 2020 with a run to the quarter-finals and she should be considered a very creditable title threat as she sits on the opposite side of the draw to world number one Iga Swiatek, who beat her at the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
This is no gimme for Ons Jabeur, who lost out in three sets to rising star Linda Noskova in the semi-finals of Adelaide 1 last week whilst suffering some concerning back pain. A week’s rest should see the Tunisian start well enough in Melbourne but that is an injury that will need close monitoring and treatment if she is to climb all seven matches here to victory. Former world number 22 Tamara Zidansek is better than her current ranking of 88th but also one of the more unpredictable players on the WTA tour. The 25-year-old is riding a three-match losing streak from the quarter-finals of the Jasmin Open last October and whilst clay is clearly her favoured surface she has occasionally performed well elsewhere. A fully fit Jabeur should be winning this match in straight sets but given her fitness concerns it would be wise to take her to win outright here.
