29th seed Tamara Zidansek had to come from a set down to Arantxa Rus and a tight 10-8 deciding tiebreak to scrape through to the second round of the Australian Open. The 24-year-old burst onto the scene with a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros on her favoured clay, with a first WTA tour title won soon after at the Lausanne Ladies Open.

British number two Heather Watson took the first set and then rallied well in the decider to beat Mayar Sherif on Tuesday and reach the second round of the Australian Open for a third-successive year. The world number 94 set a career-high WTA world ranking of 38th back in 2015 but she has won more title than most with that ceiling, with her most recent of four career WTA titles coming at the Acapulco Open in 2020. The 29-year-old won the Mixed Doubles Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2016 alongside Henri Kontinen.
