THE PREDICTION
This is a hugely surprising final in Pune between world number 95 Tallon Griekspoor and number 60 Benjamin Bonzi, with one of them set to claim a maiden ATP title. 26-year-old Griekspoor’s best result of the week was a shock straight-sets victory over Aslan Karatsev on Friday but the Dutchman has certainly ridden his luck too after Marin Cilic was forced to withdraw from their quarter-final. Bonzi, also 26, has played an extra match this week and earned his place well with three victories over seeded players in a row in Emil Ruusuvuori, Filip Krajinovic and most impressively Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets on Friday. Both players successfully made the transition from the Challenger circuit to full ATP tour tennis over the last few seasons and this first tour-level meeting between the two should come very close indeed. It is both players’ first tour final and that should see nerves come into play but Bonzi’s best form on tour has come more recently and backing him to earn at least a set here looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner. If forced to pick, the Frenchman should just edge this contest.
