World number 115 Steve Johnson claimed one of his best wins in recent seasons against Aslan Karatsev, who is clearly struggling this season, in straight sets on Sunday. The 32-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 21st back in 2016 after a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon and a first title won at the Nottingham Open. Johnson has won three of his four total ATP titles on US soil, most recently at the 2018 Hall of Fame Open.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz overcame a tough test from Oscar Otte to reach the third round of Indian Wells with a three-set victory on Sunday. The 25-year-old won his first Masters title this time last season at the Miami Open but his run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer was just as impressive, especially his victories over Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer. Hurkacz owns four ATP titles, each of them coming on hardcourts.
THE PREDICTION
Steve Johnson has enjoyed a memorable run at Indian Wells, rolling back the years with a huge result over world number 22 Aslan Karatsev in front of raucous American fans. However, Hubert Hurkacz is a totally different prospect here and the Pole is likely to be all the better for an early test against Oscar Otte. Hurkacz was the winner of their only previous meeting in straight sets back in 2019 at the Eastbourne International on grass, a surface that both enjoy, and he can be backed to come through the outright winner once again. Johnson has played well enough this campaign to warrant caution.
