THE LOWDOWN

24-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas has endured a really weird season on tour with 60 wins – more than any other player – resulting in only two titles won at the Monte-Carlo Open and Mallorca Championships. However, all of a sudden the Greek could end the year-end world number one if he wins the ATP Finals for a second time, with his victory in London back in 2019 remaining the crowing glory of his nine ATP titles so far. Tsitsipas is back up to a career-high third in the ATP world rankings but he must win all five matches in Turin to usurp Carlos Alcaraz.

World number eight Novak Djokovic would have made the ATP Finals on merit this season after finishing runner-up to Holger Rune at the Paris Masters last week but it will not escape his thoughts that he could be fighting for world number one this week with the added 2000 ranking points from the controversial points ban at Wimbledon, where he claimed the 21st major title of his career. The Serb is aiming to tie Roger Federer’s ATP Finals record of six titles this week, with his last season finale won way back in 2015. Former world number one Djokovic will be desperate to earn maximum points this week as the likelihood of his playing in Melbourne in January is next to nil after his deportation fiasco last season.

THE PREDICTION

Stefanos Tsitsipas has won more matches than any player in 2022 and by that reckoning he could be a deserving world number one. However, 22 losses is well below the level he has previously displayed on tour in what has been a thoroughly frustrating year for the Greek and he has largely struggled at the four majors too. Five defeats in finals this year, including two at Masters level, depicts a player with mentality issues over the physical and that should see him lose out the chance to make year-end world number one at the first attempt in this 12th meeting with Novak Djokovic. The Serb has beaten Tsitsipas in each of their last eight meetings on tour, in a 9-2 head-to-head record it is remarkable to believe the Greek once led twice, including on three occasions this year. Djokovic beat Tsitsipas in two finals this season in Rome and Astana and a three-set tussle in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters last Saturday suggests Djokovic can go 10-2 up with a victory here.
