THE LOWDOWN
STEFAN KOZLOV
World number 169 Stefan Kozlov took full advantage of his wildcard with a straight-sets victory over Jiri Vesely on his Grand Slam debut. The 23-year-old found plenty of success on the Challenger tour last season and he looks set to make the step up this year with his ranking improving considerably no matter the outcome here.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
World number seven Matteo Berrettini took a set to get going against a tough opening opponent in 20-year-old Brandon Nakashima but he cane back from a set down to win in four. The Italian only lost to Novak Djokovic at Grand Slams last year after pulling out of the Australian Open and drawing the Serb at each of Roland-Garros, the US Open and of course Wimbledon when he finished runner-up in four sets. Berrettini was also a semi-finalist at the 2019 US Open before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Matteo Berrettini has excellent Grand Slam pedigree and he could be a sleeper hit at the Australian Open without Novak Djokovic here to spoil his party for a fourth-consecutive major. The Italian should be winning this in straight sets but Stefan Kozlov’s perfect start to his Grand Slam career suggests taking an outright option is the sensible move here. Berrettini will be hoping for better luck with his bowels after thanking Imodium on the camera lens for helping him to a first round victory.
