THE LOWDOWN

SORANA CIRSTEA

31-year-old Sorana Cirstea’s renaissance continued on Tuesday with a commanding straight-sets victory over two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova. The Romanian has found plenty of joy against Kvitova over the years but it remains a huge Grand Slam scalp for the former world number 21 all the same. The current world number 38 won her first WTA title for over a decade at the Istanbul Open last season but her best Grand Slam showing is still that far back with a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros in 2009.

KRISTINA KUCOVA

World number 96 Kristina Kucova shocked in-form Misaki Doi in straight sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for only a second time. The 31-year-old has reached this stage of a major on five previous occasions over the years but as of yet she has never made the third round.

THE PREDICTION

Cirstea won the day in her only previous meeting with Kucova in a three-set first round result way back in 2017 at the Shenzhen Open. The Romanian will be buzzing after one of the best Grand Slam wins of her career against Kvitova, as she was last season after beating Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon before she lost to Emma Raducanu in the third round. Kucova should not be the same kind of hurdle here, though, so take the Romanian to make it 2-0 with an outright victory.
