THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Pablo Carreno Busta remains one of the more unpredictable players on the ATP tour but an incredible run to win his first Masters title was fully deserved in Montreal last August. The Spaniard reached the ATP Cup final with Spain before making the round of 16 at the Australian Open last year in a strong start to 2022 but he failed to play his two United Cup fixtures through injury concerns and this will be his first match since November’s Davis Cup Finals defeat to Marin Cilic. World number 85 Soonwoo Kwon enjoyed a strong 2022 overall and there is certainly a slight whiff of an upset here. The 25-year-old beat Dominic Thiem in qualifying at Adelaide 1 last week and he started Adelaide 2 well enough with a straight-sets victory over Tomas Machac but he has lost both previous meetings with Carreno Busta. This match may be worth avoiding altogether with questions over PCB’s fitness but the Spaniard can be backed to earn at least a set as the likelier victor if he takes to court on Wednesday.
