THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Soonwoo Kwon won his second ATP title at Adelaide 2 at the start of last season but he claimed just one more win in 2023 after suffering a huge injury lay-off. The Korean comes back to Melbourne on a protected ranking, with his most recent tour-level match a first round exit to Christopher Eubanks at the US Open in August, but he is a talented player capable of hitting the ground running against qualifier Lukas Klein. 25-year-old Klein qualified the hard way last week to make his Australian Open debut and he upset Sebastian Baez at the Brisbane International two weeks ago, albeit as a lucky loser, before a three-set exit to Matteo Arnaldi. The world number 163 looks the slight favourite on form but Kwon has earned at least a set from each of his last first round matches at majors to offer a suitable way to avoid a result. Back the Korean to earn at least one here to leave the victor up to chance.
