Former world number one Simona Halep conceded just five games to inform Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16 to suggest she is in some serious form at Indian Wells. The current world number 26 can re-join the top 20 if she reaches the semi-final as she continues the long road back to the top of the sport after a lengthy injury lay-off last season. Halep won the 23rd WTA title of her career at the start of the season at Melbourne 1. Amongst that number are two Grand Slams and six Masters titles, including Indian Wells back in 2015.
PETRA MARTIC
Former world number 14 Petra Martic took out her third-consecutive seed at Indian Wells with an impressive straight-sets victory over Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday. The 31-year-old is currently ranked at 79th after a difficult second-half to last season but she has already cut that by 20 places by reaching the quarter-finals here for a second time. Martic reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open last season before losing in three sets to the defending champion Karolina Pliskova.
THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Simona Halep means business at Indian Wells and she looks the favourite to finally end Patra Martic’s excellent run in the desert. Halep leads this head-to-head record 2-1, with their most recent clash coming at this very stage of Indian Wells back in 2018 in three sets. A decider could well be needed once again with Martic’s confidence likely sky-high after stringing four wins together for the first time since last May’s brilliant run to the Rome Masters semi-finals. Back Halep the outright winner for a fair risk or take her to win a set as the likelier of two capable winners inside an accumulator.
