Former world number one Simona Halep ended Petra Martic’s impressive run in comprehensive straight sets on Wednesday, conceding just two games to back-up solid victories over Sorana Cirstea and Coco Gauff. The 30-year-old won the 23rd WTA title of her career at Melbourne 1 back in January, with six of those career titles coming at Masters level including Indian Wells in 2015. Halep won Roland-Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon a year later.

20-year-old Iga Swiatek will usurp Barbora Krejcikova and Aryna Sabalenka into second in the WTA world rankings after ruthlessly defeating Madison Keys on Wednesday to the tune of one conceded game. The Pole is riding a nine-match winning streak from claiming the newly-upgraded Qatar Masters last month, with two of her four WTA titles won at this level after a similarly blistering run at the Italian Open last Spring. Swiatek burst onto the scene by winning Roland-Garros without dropping a set in 2020, beating Simona Halep in the fourth round.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling semi-final in the latest edition to a storied history between Simona Halep and Iga Swiatek. Former world number one Halep leads their head-to-head record 2-1 after winning their first encounter in the round of 16 of Roland-Garros in 2019 6-1, 6-0 but Swiatek returned the favour at exactly the same stage a year later in a 6-1, 6-2 victory that set her up for an assault on the title. Halep won their most recent meeting at last season’s Australian Open in three sets, also in the round of 16, but Swiatek’s form has been bubbling into something almost unstoppable over the last few months. The Pole will move to world number two for a first time no matter the outcome but she should have enough in her brutal game to level this head-to-head record with a win here.
