World number 48 Shelby Rogers came back from a set down to beat an out-of-sorts Amanda Anisimova on Tuesday, setting up an immediate rematch with Jelena Ostapenko. The 29-year-old beat Ostapenko in straight sets at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago before losing to Leylah Fernandez in three sets and a victory over Maria Sakkari at Adelaide 1 back in January is proof of what she can do. Rogers reached the round of 16 at the US Open last season, becoming the last player to beat retiring world number one Ash Barty.

World number 12 Jelena Ostapenko had reached at least the semi-finals of her previous three tournaments before losing to Shelby Rogers at Indian Wells last time out. The 24-year-old lost in the semi-finals of the St. Petersburg Open and Qatar Open to Anett Kontaveit but she won her fifth career WTA title at the Dubai Tennis Championships in a brilliant campaign that included comeback wins over Simona Halep and Iga Swiatek. It will be a great shame and several opportunities missed if Shelby Rogers hangs up her rackets with no WTA titles. The American is one of the most engaging battlers on tour and capable of beating anyone on her day – as her lasting legacy as the last player to beat Ash Barty attests to. Rogers’ victory over Ostapenko two weeks ago was the first in a 3-1 head-to-head record that heavily favours the Latvian here and this match should be a thriller that could go either way. The American will be well-backed at home and having one sets in each of the last three meetings between the two the sensible move looks to be taking her to win at least one here.
