World number 31 Sebastian Korda has amped up his performances on tour in recent months, with last weekend’s three-set defeat to Novak Djokovic at Adelaide 1 his third tour final since September. The 22-year-old lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Antwerp and Andrey Rublev in Gijon on indoor hardcourts last season but he has claimed a maiden title of his own, on clay, at the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open. Korda will be targeting a deeper run than his round of 16 exit at Wimbledon in 2021 this season but former top 20 Cristian Garin is always a tough draw at a major tournament. Whilst the 26-year-old has struggled on tour over the last few seasons his current ATP world ranking is no reflection of his ability and it would certainly be higher had he received points for his run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer.
Korda beat Garin in straight sets at Halle last summer on grass but it would be a surprise to see the Chilean fall so easily over five sets. Back Korda to win outright here with four sets the likeliest outcome.
