THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Sebastian Korda is back to his career-high ATP world ranking of 38th first set last October after one of the performances of his promising young career ended in a defeat to Rafael Nadal in three sets at Indian Wells. On another day the Florida native would have won that but it bodes well for his chances at his home tournament, where last season he reached the quarter-finals on his debut. Korda beat Aslan Karatsev, Fabio Fognini and Diego Schwartzman here last season as he burst onto the scene and he has since won a first tour title at last season’s Emilia-Romagna Open on clay. This is a tough opener, though, against world number 43 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the Spaniard comes off a tight three-set defeat to Denis Shapovalov at Indian Wells. The 22-year-old is at his best on the clay, on which he fantastically reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season, but he is a dogged competitor across all surfaces and well capable of winning this first encounter.
Back Korda to come through outright at home but the wise move for an accumulator would be to win at least a set as the likelier of two excellent young players.
