THE LOWDOWN

SARA SORRIBES TORMO

32nd-seed Sara Sorribes Tormo overcame her Australian Open women’s doubles partner Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets on Monday before the pair take to court together on Thursday. The 25-year-old lost in one of the best matches od 2021 last season in a three-set classic against Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon and she took that form into the US Open with a first Grand Slam third round reached there.

MARTA KOSTYUK

19-year-old Marta Kostyuk needed a second-set tiebreak but ultimately comfortably beat Diane Parry to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a second time. The Ukrainian raced to the third round here back in 2018 as a 15-year-old and she is certainly a rising star in the game with her career-high of 50th set last season likely to be snapped in the coming months.

THE PREDICTION

This looks a really tight match to call with Marta Kostyuk the winner of their only tour-level meeting in three sets in the quarter-finals of last season’s Abu Dhabi Open. The Ukrainian will likely surpass Sorribes Tormo’s level at some point in the near future and she likely has the better game for the hardcourts of the Australian Open but Sorribes Tormo is at her best fighting back. Take Kostyuk to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
