THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Elina Svitolina’s incredible return from maternity leave to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and the semi-finals at Wimbledon still lives fresh in the memory but it has been a more subdued start to 2024 so far. The 29-year-old finished runner-up to Coco Gauff at the Auckland Classic at the start of the year but she has struggled to make much of a dent on tour since making the last 16 at the Australian Open, with a straight-sets defeat to Elise Mertens at Charleston last time out not entirely convincing on clay.

World number 55 Sara Sorribes Tormo’s counter-punching brick wall of a game could feed right into Svitolina’s more aggressive hands on Thursday but the Spaniard will be backed to the hilt as the home hopeful here in Madrid and she is certainly the more comfortable in these conditions. A straight-sets victory over Bernarda Pera on Wednesday is a solid way to start her Madrid campaign but she will have to improve significantly on recent performances to win here. Back Svitolina to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
