37-year-old Samantha Stosur is retiring her singles career here in Melbourne and she came back from a set down to beat fellow wildcard Robin Anderson in a hugely emotional occasion. The world number 487 won the US Open in 2010 a year after reaching the Roland-Garros final but she has gone on to become one of the best doubles champions in history with a total of 31 titles in Women’s (28) and Mixed (3), with last season’s US Open won alongside Shuai Zhang her seventh Grand Slam title in that format of the sport.
ANASTASIA PAVLYUCHENKOVA
World number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova conceded just three games to Anna Bondar on Tuesday. The 30-year-old snapped her Grand Slam quarter-final curse at the seventh attempt last season as she finally pushed past the last eight and into a first major final at Roland-Garros before losing to Barbora Krejcikova. The Russian has made the quarter-finals here in three of her last five appearances.

Stosur and Pavlyuchenkova have a storied history that could make for a really exciting second round clash here in Melbourne, especially with their head-to-head record at four wins apiece at tour level.
