THE PREDICTION
This looks a strong candidate for a five-set thriller between two players who have come into their own over the last 12 months. 27-year-old Tallon Griekspoor set a career-high ATP world ranking of 21st after winning his second of two ATP titles last season, on home grass at the ‘s-Hertogenbosch Open, but 26-year-old Roman Safiullin brings the better recent form. The Russian set a career-high of 36th this week after a run to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International built on his excellent late-season form last year, where he finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Chengdu Open before strong runs at Masters events in Shanghai and Paris. A quarter-final exit at Wimbledon last summer is proof of the levels Safiullin can find this season but Griekspoor made the third round here last year with all the tools for these conditions. Back both players to win at least a set or consider a one-off for this match to need a decider in their first encounter.
