THE LOWDOWN
RICHARD GASQUET
35-year-old Richard Gasquet rolled back the years on Tuesday to upset French number one Ugo Humbert, winning from a set down with two tiebreaks over the enigmatic youngster. Soon after, Humbert tested positive for covid-19 and that not only throws light on the result of the match, not to take away from Gasquet’s excellent performance, but also as to whether he can play in the second round. The Frenchman set a career-high ATP world ranking of seventh and he was thrice a Grand Slam semi-finalist at the US Open in 2013 and Wimbledon in 2007 and 2015.
BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP
World number 57 Botic van de Zandschulp continued his excellent Grand Slam form from last season into 2022 with a straight-sets victory over Jan-Lennard Struff. The Dutchman beat Hubert Hurkacz at Roland-Garros last season for a first major win before producing a stunning run to the US Open quarter-finals where he became the only player to take a set off eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
THE PREDICTION
Hold off on this match until we hear more from Melbourne, with what looks like Richard Gasquet’s last season potentially getting off to an unfortunate start if he has to isolate. The Frenchman contracted covid-19 for himself, for a second time, upon arriving in Australia at the start of the month so in all likelihood he will test negative before Thursday’s match with Botic van de Zandschulp and probably be cleared to play. If so, this match could see four hours. Van de Zandschulp is no stranger to a marathon match at the majors already and if Gasquet can produce the level he found against Humbert there is surely a set or two in this for him. On recent form, take the Dutchman to come through eventually and over three sets in the match if you can find that option.
